Sinopsis
Kukatja is a language that belongs to the Wati branch (sometimes also referred to as Western Desert) of the larger Pama-Nyungan family of Australian languages. As such, it pretty much resembles other Western Desert languages, such as Martu Wangka, Ngalia, Pintupi, Luritji, Pitjantjatjara or Ngaanyatjarra. This mirli-mirli ‘book’ is an introduction to help you acquire the basic skills to communicate in Kukatja. Lessons are organised in an incremental fashion. However, you can also use the book as a pedagogical grammar.
This leaners’ guide was made possible thanks to a postdoctoral followship made possible to the first author by the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language (CoEDL) and the University of Queensland School of Languages and Cultures between 2018-2021.
The final publication and copy-editing of this book was fully funded by an Accelerating Recovery Grant, granted to the first author by the Centre for Language Studies from Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands in 2024.
